Zainab Beyond The Veil

My journey with the hijab has been a path of growth and self-discovery, shaped by moments of uncertainty, self-reflection, and evolving confidence. At times, the decision to cover felt daunting, challenged by societal pressures and shifting personal beliefs. Yet, over the years, these moments of doubt gave way to a stronger commitment to my hijab. It has become a symbol of my inner strength, a form of self-expression, and an empowering choice that deepens with time. Through each phase of my life, it has affirmed my identity, values, and resilience.

As a cardiac nurse, I balance compassion with creativity, caring for others while nurturing my own well-being. Outside the hospital, photography has been my constant companion, allowing me to capture moments that reveal beauty in the ordinary. As nurses, we’re encouraged to reflect, and I bring that mindset into my street photography. You can see examples of my work on my Instagram @zedhalens_. Recently, crochet has woven itself into my life, offering a peaceful rhythm that contrasts with my demanding profession. These passions help me stay grounded while I continue caring for those who suffer with cardiac conditions.

Beyond the veilI is a project focussed on the women beyond the cloth that they choose to cover with.

The cloth that covers my head serves as a reminder to look beyond appearances, to see the depth of who I am and the layers of experiences that shape people. It’s an invitation to others to look past the surface—to recognize the strength, compassion, creativity, and resilience that lie beneath. The veil doesn’t define me; it’s simply a part of my identity, encouraging a broader view of who I am and what I stand for.
